Windsor Regional Hospital President and Chief Executive Officer David Musyj says that they are cautiously optimistic they found the source of the recent issues that have been facing the Ouellette campus regarding the “scorching/staining” of cloths. The issue has resulted in the OR rooms being closed.
In an email to staff he says that the issue “resides in the 1962 steam lines that run from the powerhouse to the autoclaves. As a result we are not only resolving this issue but applying additional filters to the steam system to try to remedy this situation for the longer term. The only issue we have to test is by placing additional filters in the system we have to ensure they do not negatively impact pressure in the lines, since they are not typically on these lines, that could result in more wet sets/loads. However, as normal practice, when faced with a wet set/load will reject it.”
He also says that two independent laboratory tests have come back on the “scorching/staining” issue and have confirmed that the preliminary results confirm it is a scorch and any materials found on the cloth are organic in nature, not harmful, do not negatively impact sterilization of the instruments.
He says they will not be in a position to fully test the system until late in the day of Friday and are aiming for Tuesday morning, to get the OR back up and running.
