Health Unit COVID-19 Cases & Outbreaks Update From The Weekend

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 61 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County from over the weekend. The Health Unit does not report case counts and statistics on weekends but provides a weekend summary.

New & Total Cases

Of the 61 new cases: 23 were reported on November 6th, 27 were reported on November 7th, and 11 were reported on November 8th.

The Health Unit says 29 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 16 cases are community acquired, 4 cases are outbreak related, 1 case is travel related, and the acquisition sources of 5 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 20,644 on Friday November 5th to 20,705 on Monday November 8th.

They say 186 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (decrease of 7 since Friday).

Variants of Concern

  • 1,840 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma variant (P.1)
  • 3,062 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 59)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain. The numbers listed are not necessarily correlated to today’s new cases due to the delay.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 326,367 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+518 since Friday)
    • 15,030 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-469 since Friday)
    • 311,337 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+332 since Friday)
    • 6,757 people have received a 3rd dose/booster shot of a vaccine (+1,005 since Friday)
  • A total of 644,461 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+2,510 since Friday)

Vaccination Percentages

  • 74.5 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.2 per cent since Friday)
    • 86.0 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.1 per cent since Friday)
  • 71.0 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.2 per cent since Friday)
    • 82.1 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.3 per cent since Friday)
  • 1.5 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received a 3rd dose/booster shot of a vaccine (increase of 0.2 per cent since Friday)

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County presently.

The Health Unit lists 20,053 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 68 resolved cases since Friday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 and the local death toll stands at 466.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 9 hospitalizations today: 9 people in acute care (increase of 2), and 0 people in the ICU (decrease of 2) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
