Health Unit COVID-19 Cases & Outbreaks Update For Wednesday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 46 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Wednesday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 23 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 9 cases are community acquired, 3 cases are outbreak related, and the acquisition sources of 11 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 19,853 on Tuesday October 5th to 19,899 on Wednesday October 6th.

They say 260 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 22 since yesterday).

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 4,434 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 40 since yesterday).

Variant case strains:

• 1,834 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7)
• 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta variant (B.1.351)
• 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma variant (P.1)
• 2,427 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 40 since yesterday)
• 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain. The numbers listed are not necessarily correlated to today’s new cases due to the delay.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

• 317,658 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+464 since yesterday)
  • 296,598 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+693 since yesterday)
  • 4,130 people have received a 3rd dose/booster shot of a vaccine (+84 since yesterday)
• A total of 618,386 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+1,241 since yesterday)

Vaccination Percentages

• 72.5 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
  • 83.7 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
• 67.7 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.2 per cent since yesterday)
  • 78.2 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.2 per cent since yesterday)

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

The Health Unit lists 19,181 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 22 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

The Health Unit announced two additional deaths from COVID-19 today bringing the local death toll to 458. They say a woman in her 50s and a woman in her 60s passed away.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 15 hospitalizations today: 6 people in acute care (increase of 3), and 9 people in the ICU (increase of 1) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
