66 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Friday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 66 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Friday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 24 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 14 cases are community acquired, 3 cases are outbreak related, 1 case is travel related, and the acquisition sources of 24 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 18,786 on Thursday September 9th to 18,852 on Friday September 10th.

They say 543 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (decrease of 3 since yesterday).

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 3,610 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 69 since yesterday).

Variant case strains:

  • 1,834 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 1,607 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 69 since yesterday)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain. The numbers listed are not necessarily correlated to today’s new cases due to the delay.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 306,569 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+471 since yesterday)
    • 26,835 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-25 since yesterday) *
    • 279,734 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+496 since yesterday)
  • A total of 586,303 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+967 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 69.99 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.11 per cent since yesterday)
    • 80.8 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
  • 63.86 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.11 per cent since yesterday)
    • 73.7 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

That’s an increase of 69 resolved cases since yesterday.

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 444.

The Health Unit lists 17 hospitalizations today: 14 people in acute care (decrease of 7), and 3 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
