The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 73 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Thursday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 26 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 10 cases are community acquired, 1 case is outbreak related, and the acquisition sources of 36 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 18,713 on Wednesday September 8th to 18,786 on Thursday September 9th.

They say 546 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 3 since yesterday).

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 3,541 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 158 since yesterday).

Variant case strains:

  • 1,834 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 1,538 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 168 since yesterday)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain. The numbers listed are not necessarily correlated to today’s new cases due to the delay.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 306,098 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+492 since yesterday)
    • 26,860 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-0 since yesterday) *
    • 279,238 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+492 since yesterday)
  • A total of 585,336 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+984 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 69.88 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.11 per cent since yesterday)
    • 80.7 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.2 per cent since yesterday)
  • 63.75 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.11 per cent since yesterday)
    • 73.6 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

The Health Unit lists 17,796 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 69 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

The Health Unit announced one additional death from COVID-19 today bringing the local death toll to 444. They say a man in his 50s from the community passed away.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 24 hospitalizations today: 21 people in acute care (increase of 3), and 3 people in the ICU (decrease of 1) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
