Severe thunderstorms topped trees, knocked out power to thousands, and even severely damaged a house in Cottam, Wednesday afternoon.
Fast moving storms swept through the area between 3:30pm and 4:30pm with wind gusts up to 120km/h in areas.
Gusts at Windsor Airport were reported at nearly 90km/h.
In Windsor, power was knocked out to around 2,000 customers by high winds. Power was out in LaSalle to 6,048 residents, and for 2,505 customers in Amherstburg.
Hydro One was working at the time of publishing to restore a feeder line serving Essex, Harrow and Kingsville.
The storm caused significant damage to a home in Cottam, destroying part of the roof, bending a television antenna tower, and sending debris into a nearby field. Nearby, the storm knocked over a tractor trailer and overturned a recreational vehicle.
Researchers with Western University’s Northern Tornados Project, which “works with Environment Canada to help verify tornadoes across the country through ground surveys, witness reports and surveillance data” say they’ll be investigating the damage in Cottam on Thursday to determine if it was caused by a tornado.
I’ll be in the Cottam, ON area tomorrow morning to do a ground survey for @westernuNTP. Again, if you have any damage reports from the area, forward them to myself or @NTP_Reports #onwx #ONStorm https://t.co/U2uLAxgBto
