70 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Friday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 70 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Friday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 5 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 3 cases are community acquired, and the acquisition sources of 62 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 17,834 on Thursday August 26th to 17,904 on Friday August 27th.

They say 472 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 26).

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 2,741 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 33).

Variant case strains:

  • 1,834 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 738 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 37)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain. The numbers listed are not necessarily correlated to today’s new cases due to the delay.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 298,795 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+409 since yesterday)
    • 27,242 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-147 since yesterday) *
    • 271,553 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+556 since yesterday)
  • A total of 570,348 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+965 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 68.21 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
    • 78.7 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 61.99 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
    • 71.6 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 16,993 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 44 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 and the local death toll stands at 439.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 15 hospitalizations today: 10 people in acute care (increase of 3), and 5 people in the ICU (increase of 1) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
