37 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Tuesday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 37 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Tuesday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 2 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 3 cases are community acquired, 1 case is travel related, and the acquisition sources of 31 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 17,658 on Monday August 23rd to 17,695 on Tuesday August 24th.

They say 388 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (decrease of 3).

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 2,519 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 9).

Variant case strains:

  • 1,834 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 515 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 9)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain. The numbers listed are not necessarily correlated to today’s new cases due to the delay.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 297,554 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+419 since yesterday)
    • 27,681 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-140 since yesterday) *
    • 269,873 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+559 since yesterday)
  • A total of 567,433 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+984 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 67.93 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
    • 78.4 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 61.61 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
    • 71.1 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

The Health Unit lists 16,868 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 40 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 and the local death toll stands at 439.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 12 hospitalizations today but a breakdown between hospitalized and ICU was not available at the time of publication.
