1 New Death, 21 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Wednesday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 21 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Wednesday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 8 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 7 cases are community acquired, 1 case is travel related, and the acquisition sources of 5 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 17,056 on Tuesday August 10th to 17,077 on Wednesday August 11th.

They say 157 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 12).

The Health Unit does not provide a breakdown of whether cases are in people who are vaccinated or not, however Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health said Friday that approximately 75 to 80 per cent of local cases are in people who are unvaccinated.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 2,081 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 1).

Variant case strains:

• 1,832 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
• 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
• 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
• 85 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 2)
• 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 40 variants of concern cases are currently active in Windsor-Essex (decrease of 6).

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

• 291,388 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (-51 since yesterday)
  • 30,931 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-527 since yesterday) *
  • 260,457 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+476 since yesterday)
• A total of 551,845 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+425 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

• 66.52 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 76.8 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
• 59.46 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
  • 68.6 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated

The Health Unit lists 1 hospitalization from Windsor-Essex today: 1 person in acute care (decrease of 1), and 0 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
