The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 3 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Thursday, bringing the local total to 16,846.
New Cases
Cases increased from 16,843 on Wednesday July 14th to 16,846 on Thursday July 15th, and 19 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.
The Health Unit says 1 case is a close contact of a confirmed case, and the acquisition sources of 2 cases are still under investigation.
Variants of Concern
The Health Unit says 1,988 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 2 today).
Variant case strains:
- 1,815 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
- 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
- 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
- 10 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 2 today)
- 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)
The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.
They say 5 variants of concern cases are currently active in Windsor-Essex.
Vaccinations
Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):
- 280,644 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+541 since yesterday)
- 61,187 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-3,425 since yesterday) *
- 219,457 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+3,966 since yesterday)
- A total of 500,101 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+4,507 since yesterday)
* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses
Vaccination Percentages
- 64.07 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
- 75.9 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (adults) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
- 50.10 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
- 60.9 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (adults) are fully vaccinated

The Health Unit lists 3 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 2 people in acute care (decrease of 5), and 1 person in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
