70 New Cases Of COVID-19, 1 New Death In Windsor Essex On Friday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 70 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Friday, bringing the local total to 14,304.
New Cases
Cases increased from 14,234 on Thursday April 8th to 14,304 on Friday April 9th and 420 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.
The Health Unit says 13 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 9 cases are community acquired, and 48 cases are still being investigated by the Health Unit’s nursing staff.
The Health Unit says 215 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (an increase of 17 identified since yesterday). Health Unit CEO Theresa Marentette says 104 of the currently active cases are variants.
Vaccinations
Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today:
- 98,928 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+3,049 since yesterday)
- 86,494 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (+3,035 since yesterday)
- 12,434 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+14 since yesterday)
- A total of 111,362 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+3,133 since yesterday)
Health Unit CEO Theresa Marentette says they expect to hit a milestone of 100,000 people vaccinated with at least one dose by the end of Friday.

There are two vaccination programs at this time:
- Mass Vaccination Clinics (Pfizer or Moderna)
- Adults aged 50 and older living in “hot spot” postal code regions: N8X, N8Y, N9A, N9B, N9C, N8H, or N9Y
- Adults aged 60 and older living anywhere in Windsor-Essex

Resolved Cases
The Health Unit lists 13,478 total resolved cases.
That’s an increase of 42 resolved cases since yesterday.
Deaths
The Health Unit announced one additional death from COVID-19 today bringing the local death toll to 406. Health Unit CEO Theresa Marentette says a man in his 80s from the community passed away.
Hospitalizations
The Health Unit lists 15 hospitalizations today: 11 people in acute care (decrease of 1 today), and 4 people in the ICU (decrease of 1 today) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
