5 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex, 1 Additional Death As Of Saturday Afternoon

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has confirmed 5 additional cases of COVID-19 as of Saturday afternoon, bringing the local total to 767. They said 407 people locally have recovered.

Cases increased from 762 on Friday May 15th to 767 on Saturday May 16th.

The Health Unit confirmed one additional death due to COVID-19 as of Saturday afternoon, bringing the local COVID-19 death toll to 63.  They say a man in his eighties, positive for COVID-19, passed away yesterday.

“The team at the WECHU would like to express their condolences to the family for their loss,” said Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health.

The Health Unit says there are ongoing outbreaks at 18 long-term care and retirement homes: Chartwell Kingsville Retirement Residence, Berkshire Care Centre, Chartwell Classic Oak Park, Village at St. Clair, Extendicare Southwood Lakes, Extendicare Tecumseh (St. Alphonse), Franklin Gardens, Sun Parlour, Lifetimes on Riverside, AMICA, Country Village Homes, Heron Terrace LTC, Riverside Place, Chartwell Oak Park Terrace Retirement Residence, Leamington Mennonite Home, Dolce Vita Retirement Living, Regency Park Nursing Home, and Banwell Gardens Care Centre.

On Friday the Health Unit’s data showed a total of 190 residents and 93 staff of local long-term care and retirement homes have, or have had COVID-19, and as of Saturday afternoon, those case numbers were 190 residents and 100 staff.

As of Saturday afternoon, 13,789 tests have been conducted and 1,146 tests are pending.
