The Welcome Centre Shelter for Women announced a  new women-centered Needle Syringe Program on Tuesday which is International Women’s Day.

Needle Syringe Programs are evidence-based programs that provide people with educational materials and resources surrounding harm reduction, health and social services and non-judgmental, equitable service. People who use drugs are provided new equipment, such as safer injection kits, safer inhalation kits, and condoms, to reduce the spread of infections in the community.

A variety of harm reducing materials will be accessible for female residents of Windsor-Essex County, 18 years and older.

“A needle syringe program aimed at women’s needs is absolutely essential in our community. Through our enhanced partnership with ACW we will raise awareness of safer practices and support women through onsite programming.” Katie Nanson, the Shelter’s Director of Social Work Programming.

The program will be accessible to women in the community between the hours of 8am and 8pm, seven days a week.  The Welcome Centre and AIDS Committee staff will provide specialized support Monday thru Wednesday between 12pm and 3pm, and Thursday between 5pm and 8pm.

It will also be available during the Shelter’s Food Bank hours; Monday and Wednesday between 12pm and 3pm to women living west of Crawford Avenue, and to all current residents of the shelter, 24 hours a day.
