Members of the Harrow community are bring encouraged to attend a public meeting on Wednesday, January 6th to learn about community efforts to avert the closure of Harrow District High School.

Essex Town Council and the Harrow District High School Working Committee will meet at the Camoes Portuguese Club located at 390 Sinasac Street, Harrow starting at 7pm to provide the community with an update on measures that have been taken to save Harrow High, and to explore viable options for retaining the high school in our community.

Back on October 13th trustees with the Greater Essex County District School Board voted to close Harrow High School at the end of June 2016. The Town filed a formal request for administrative review of that decision on November 10th. The Ministry is expected to announce by mid-January whether it will appoint a facilitator to determine whether the board’s accommodation review process was undertaken in a manner consistent with its locally developed policies and the Ministry’s guidelines.

“In the event that the Ministry appoints a facilitator, we want to be prepared to return to the school board with a practical and viable plan for maintaining Harrow High School in our community,” says Ward 4 Councillor Sherry Bondy.

The Working Committee is exploring opportunities to develop a JK to Grade 12 program that includes Specialist High Skills Majors at the high school level. Specialized streams under consideration include environmental and conservation education; technology and computer science; agriculture and greenhouse technologies; wineries, hospitality and culinary; and fine arts, dance and music.

“We are committed to ensuring that we can provide the school board with compelling reasons for retaining Harrow High and practical solutions to meeting the education needs of families in our community,” says Bondy.
