The maple leaf flag was raised for the very first time just fifty years ago on February 15th, 1965, and it wasn’t without controversy.

Thousands of designs were considered and the process resulted in a bitter debate about symbols in the House of Commons. The maple leaf design was finally chosen and signed into law resulting in a rush to produce enough flags in time for a special ceremony on Parliament Hill.

This Sunday on the 50th anniversary of the flag, stop into Windsor’s Community Museum and see one of the original 1965 first-day-flags.

Popular local historian Janet Cobban will be sharing stories about the flag and the history behind the controversy.

The event takes place from 1pm to 4pm.
