Pathway to Potential and Food Matters Windsor Essex County have over $30,000 in market dollars still for sale, and are having a hard time getting people to purchase them.
Market dollars are available for purchase by local agencies that service low income and vulnerable populations at fifty cents per dollar, in bundles of twenty dollars. The agencies then give these vouchers, equivalent to a monetary value of one dollar per market dollar, to community members struggling with food security to spend at supportive local farmers’ markets.
“It’s surprising we haven’t sold out yet,” says Michele Legere, coordinator of Food Matters Windsor Essex County. “We are selling a dollar for fifty cents and that’s an incredibly good deal.”
Market Dollars is made possible this year thanks to the United Way Centraide of Windsor-Essex County, Caesars Windsor and the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.
Market dollars are redeemable at the Downtown Windsor Farmers’ Market and the Ford City Sunday Market.
