The Friends of Turkey Creek will host the Tenth Annual Turkey Creek Canoe Race and Cleanup on Saturday June 23rd.

Competitors will launch at Gerry Craig Park in LaSalle, located across from Roma’s Pizzeria on Front Road. Participants will then paddle upstream or downstream, and will collect garbage as they paddle out. Paddlers have two hours to collect as much garbage as they can. At 3pm, paddlers will return to the starting point, at which point their ‘haul’ will be unloaded. Each team will be judged for the most garbage, the most unusual piece of garbage removed from the creek, and the best-decorated canoe. Prizes will be awarded accordingly. The winning team will also have their picture taken with our Turkey Creek Canoe Race trophy!

If you have a canoe, or other non-motorized watercraft, please bring it! Each participant must have a personal flotation device (life jacket), and each watercraft must be equipped with a bailer and a throw bag with line & whistle. A limited number of canoes and associated gear will be available on a first come, first serve basis. Gloves and garbage bags will also be provided for the cleanup.

Registration is free to all those with their own canoe or other non-motorized watercraft. Organizers say that donations are always gratefully accepted and go towards future stewardship efforts of the Friends of Turkey Creek. A free lunch will be available for all participants before the start of the race. In an effort to reduce the use of plastic water bottles, participants are encouraged to bring their own refillable water bottle.

Registration that day begins at noon, and the race starts at 1pm sharp at Gerry Craig Park in LaSalle. All are welcome, including families, high school teams and corporate teams.
