Tonight, Windsor City Council will debate the sale or lease of a wood lot located on the fringe of the campus of St. Clair College.
St. Clair College had requested that the City sell the 6.78-acre forest to them as part of a bigger deal which would see the college selling a parcel of land on campus for construction of a 256-bed Schlegel Villages long-term care facility.
City Administration had recommended selling the woodlot, but last Monday, the Executive Committee of council rejected this request and instead offered a 99 year lease to the college for a $1.00 a year. Members of council feel that in the future the wood lot may be lost for development on campus such as additional parking, and they wish to protect the sensitive lands.
St. Clair College has said that the sale of the woodlot to them is a key part of their plan to sell the land for the long-term care facility. If they don’t get ownership of the woodlot, the facility could be in jeopardy.
City Council makes a final decision tonight.
