Detroit Free Press Marathon Runs Through Windsor, Sunday

The 34th annual Detroit Free Press Marathon takes place on both sides of the border Sunday.  This year 4,400 runners will run the full 26.2 mile (42 km) race; up to 10,300 will run the half marathon and up to 2,500 will be taking part in the “Fitness 5K”.

The Detroit Free Press Marathon makes its way through Windsor — over the Ambassador Bridge and along Riverside Drive — between Huron Church and Goyeau from approximately 7:00 am to 9:45 am.  Windsorites are encouraged to line the marathon route to cheer runners on.

City transit buses will have several detours on Sunday morning due to street closures for the race.  You can see all the bus detours at this link. The Detroit-Windsor tunnel will be closed to all vehicular traffic between 7:00 am until 9:45 am.  The first tunnel bus trip from Windsor will be at 10:00 am and the bus will short turn – drop off at tunnel platform next to Mariner’s Church – until the streets in downtown Detroit are open.

For Canadian participants attending the Marathon, a bus will leave the Downtown Windsor Transit Terminal for Detroit at 5:30 am and at 5:45 am.  Buses will return from Detroit at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm departing from Cobo Hall.  The fare is $4.00 each way. The Transit Terminal will open at 5:00 am for participants to purchase tickets.
