47 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Windsor Essex On Thursday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 47 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Thursday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 13 cases are community acquired, 10 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 1 case is outbreak related, and the acquisition sources of 23 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 19,114 on Wednesday September 15th to 19,161 on Thursday September 16th.

They say 416 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (decrease of 13 since yesterday).

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 3,831 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 81 since yesterday).

Variant case strains:

  • 1,834 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 1,829 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 81 since yesterday)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain. The numbers listed are not necessarily correlated to today’s new cases due to the delay.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 309,249 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+497 since yesterday)
    • 26,396 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-90 since yesterday) *
    • 282,853 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+587 since yesterday)
  • A total of 592,102 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+1,084 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 70.60 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.11 per cent since yesterday)
    • 81.5 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
  • 64.57 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.13 per cent since yesterday)
    • 74.5 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

The Health Unit lists 18,297 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 60 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 448.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 17 hospitalizations today: 12 people in acute care (increase of 1), and 5 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
