Tonight, Windsor City Council is set to approve the demolition of the former Grace Hospital building on Crawford and University Avenue in west Windsor.
The hospital, which closed in 2004 has been left to deteriorate as plans to develop it into a long term faculty fell though. After several missed deadlines from the developer to clean up the site and take action, the City of Windsor purchased the building and property at the end of November for 2.3 million dollars, and promised to “take immediate action to clean up the area.”
Tenders went out for its demolition and site clean up and the lowest bid was from Budget Environmental Disposal Inc. from Hamilton for $4,162,340. Total cost for the entire project after legal fees, administration costs, surveys and site security are factored in will be $4,447,887. The city hopes to recoup most of the money from the province of Ontario as they pledge finical support to help clean up the site.
