Michigan Nuclear Plant hit by Tornado: more destruction outside Essex County

Storms may have damaged parts of Harrow and most of Leamington last night, but Michigan and Ohio were also hit hard by the same storm system.

In Monroe County, Michigan (think:  South-West of Amherstburg), the US’ National Weather Service confirmed this afternoon that a tornado touched down and traveled for 21km to just outside the Fermi 2 Nuclear Plant on Lake Erie.  The plant suffered significant damage to its exterior walls, according to a  slew of American wire news services.  Engineers immediately took the plant offline and shut down its reactors.  The plant is being inspected for anything other than superficial damage.

In Lenawee County, near the Michigan-Ohio border, another tornado made ground contact and traveled for 4km.  There are reports of injuries in Michigan, but no fatalities.

Down in Ohio, the situation was much worse.  Seven people were reported (by wire news agency the Associated Press) to have perished from multiple tornadoes.

Back in Michigan, 35000 homes are without power.
