Health Unit COVID-19 Cases & Outbreaks Update For Thursday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 17 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Thursday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says, 6 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 6 cases are community acquired, and the acquisition sources of 5 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 20,448 on Wednesday October 27th to 20,471 on Thursday October 28th.

They say 173 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (decrease of 1 since yesterday).

Variants of Concern

• 1,839 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7)
• 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta variant (B.1.351)
• 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma variant (P.1)
• 2,879 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 49)
• 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain. The numbers listed are not necessarily correlated to today’s new cases due to the delay.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

• 324,282 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+218 since yesterday)
  • 16,677 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-126 since yesterday)
  • 307,605 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+344 since yesterday)
  • 4,974 people have received a 3rd dose/booster shot of a vaccine (+38 since yesterday)
• A total of 636,861 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+600 since yesterday)

Vaccination Percentages

• 74.0 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
  • 85.5 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
• 70.2 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
  • 81.1 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

The Health Unit lists 19,834 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 24 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 464.

The Health Unit lists 12 hospitalizations today: 7 people in acute care, and 5 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
