Colio Estate Wines is donating $100,000 towards the creation of two academic scholarships at St. Clair College and Brock University, in memory of their late Master Winemaker, Carlo Negri.
The aptly named scholarship, the Carlo Negri Memorial Scholarship, will have a total value of $50,000 each, with $5,000 awarded to one student enrolled in the Culinary/Hospitality program at St. Clair College and a student enrolled in the winemaking programme at Brock University.
Carlo Negri was Colio’s first winemaker, arriving from Italy in 1980, and was instrumental in the development of Colio’s winery, wines and reputation in the Ontario wine industry. he played a vital role in the establishment of the Lake Erie North Shore viticultural area as a world class wine producing region. Negri passed in June of 2014.
“Carlo devoted over 30 years to Colio,” says Colio Estate Wines President Jim Clark. “Upon his retirement from a most distinguished career with us he continued to provide invaluable guidance as our winemaking consultant and committed mentor to our winery and cellar staff. He was a mentor to many, both within Colio and throughout the industry, and was always available to provide support and assistance to other winemakers, growers and winery leaders. We are proud to continue his legacy by providing these scholarships to future industry leaders, in his honour.”
Scholarship recipients will be made by a selection committee at the respective institution based on financial need, demonstrated leadership, community involvement, and a passion for their craft.
The first award recipients will be announced shortly.
