Windsor City Council has voted against a city administration recommendation to close the Windsor Water World Community Centre and instead voted to keep the center open, until new suitable sites could be found for programming.
Administration wanted to shut the centre to save $315,000, saying that the center had the lowest number of visits across all city community centeres. Attendance for non aquatic programs went from 19,929 in 2013 to 16,919 in 2014. In comparison, Forest Glade had 24,786 participants and Oakwood had 45,561 last year.
However, council heard from several delegations urging council to keep the community center open stressing the importance of the centre to the neighbourhood.
United Way CAO Lorraine Goddard said that the community center is the anchor of the Glengary community.
City administration will now meet with community groups and stakeholders and come back to council with a report in the near future on possible new locations for programming.
