Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex broke ground Monday for the 57th Habitat home to be built since Habitat for Humanity first came to Windsor-Essex County 20 years ago.

This home will be the third of four homes to be built this year and will be built for the MacInnis family at 1233 Armanda Street.

“The community has been so supportive of our build projects,” says Mike Van der Vlist, Executive Director, HFHWE. “Corporate teams and sponsorships, as well as the Faith community, skilled labourers and individual volunteers have made it possible for Habitat to continue building our community.”

The MacInnis family, Robert and Michelle, along with 18 year old Kristopher, 14 year old Jordan, 12 year old Skylar, 9 year old Angela, 7 year old Breanna and 5 year old Cydney are eager to start building their home through the HFHWE Affordable Homeownership Program.

“It is a long and emotional process, but now that we are really getting started, it is very exciting,” said Robert MacInnis. “We have a large, blended family – and we are really looking forward to being able to sit down and eat dinner together as a family instead of eating in shifts.”

The MacInnis Family home will be built with special accommodations in mind to make the home safe for one of their children who has special needs.

Based on these required accommodations, The Home Depot Canada Foundation awarded Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex with a grant to support this build project. As a major sponsor, local Home Depot employees will also be offering their support and expertise to assist in the construction of the home.

Work on the six bedroom, two bathroom home is scheduled to begin the first week in August. If you are interested in volunteering for the build, submitting a corporate team or sponsoring a lunch or snack for Build Volunteers, please contact Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex at 519-969-3762 ext. 229 or by email: [email protected].
