From a chemistry magic show, to a “funky physics show,” and even a science chase, the Science Rendezvous event got Windsorites involved in science.
The Science Rendezvous brought out hundreds of participants, plenty of children and even got adults involved in the event.
Jonathan Yu, student chair for the Science Rendezvous Windsor Organizing Committee is taking his masters in chemistry at the University of Windsor. He said he just wanted to share his passion for science with the public.
“We try to do a lot of hands on activities, demonstrations … just to get people more engaged and experience science in a fun way,” said Yu. “I hope people are stimulated by some of the activities that are happening here, and definitely gain some interesting in science as well and hopefully possibly choose a career path in the future, or even just enjoy some of the science that happens in everyday lives.”
Windsor resident Melissa Williams brought her daughter to the event, along with her sister and nephew. She said she saw an ad on facebook, and figured they would give it a try. They weren’t sure what to expect, but are definitely glad they came out.
“It’s more than what I was expecting because I wasn’t really sure what we’d find, I didn’t know if it was just little projects that we couldn’t touch but we can actually get involved, the kids are having a blast, we’re even having fun,” said Williams. “We can actually participate in things, and that makes it a lot better. My daughter is learning a lot, she did some DNA stuff and she actually touched a heart and a lung and she wasn’t even scared.”
Matt McCall, public education director of the Royal Astronomy Society of Windsor, was excited to be a part of the public. He said the Science Rendezvous really gives people in Windsor a chance to see and understand all the aspects of science.
“We’re dedicated to educating the public about the science of astronomy,” said McCall. “Astronomy is a pretty interesting subject and at science rendezvous you get your opportunity to view all that science has to offer. We join in this with our subject of astronomy because we feel that it’s something that needs to be discussed and brought out the public.”
McCall added that with such a heavily light polluted city such as Windsor, most residents don’t get to experience the sky, the stars and the planets. It’s events like these that really give the society the opportunity to share their work with the public.
