Staycation Tax Credit
The past two years have encouraged many people to vacation closer to home. The upside of this has been discovering hidden gems in your own backyard! We’ve put together a few ideas for the perfect Summer Staycation in Windsor Essex to take advantage of the Government of Ontario’s Staycation Tax Credit for 2022.
The temporary Ontario Staycation Tax Credit encourages Ontario families to explore the province, while helping the tourism and hospitality sectors recover from the financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ontario residents can claim 20% of their eligible 2022 accommodation when filing their personal Income Tax and Benefit Return for 2022. You can claim eligible expenses of up to $1,000 as an individual or $2,000 as a family to get back up to $200 for individuals or $400 for families.
You must be an Ontario resident on December 31, 2022 to be eligible to claim.
You can claim the Ontario Staycation Tax Credit for accommodation expenses for a leisure stay of less than a month in Ontario, at a short-term accommodation or camping accommodation, such as a:
- hotel
- motel
- resort
- lodge
- bed-and-breakfast establishment
- cottage
- campground

Round out the weekend with a round of golf at one of the lush green courses Windsor Essex has to offer.
Destination: Staycation:
Plan your next mini-vacay with a staycation in Kingsville. Book a night or two at The Grove Hotel and spend the day peddling around town on an electric or cruiser bike. Shop at Anna’s Garden Home & Wellness, pick up delectable chocolate from Dutch Boys Chocolate and your own personal wine + beer tour with stops at Pelee Island Winery, Kingsville Brewing Co, Banded Goose Brewery and The Grove Brewing Company. Your toughest decision will be where to go for dinner with several superb dining options along Kingsville’s Main Street!
A Staycation for the road less travelled:
Looking for a bit of adventure close to home but a world away? Book your ferry trip to Pelee Island and you will not be disappointed! Plan to stay at The Wandering Dog Inn – Canada’s most Southern Inn. Staycation: Family Fun Edition!
Pack up the kids for a fun-filled trip with a stay at the Holiday Inn & Suites Windsor Ambassador Bridge with onsite restaurant and indoor swimming pool you won’t even need to leave the property! – But we encourage you to head out for a day to Colchester Harbour and Holiday Beach. Start the day off with tummies full of breakfast from Garfield’s Colchester, then spend some time at Colchester Harbour. With a beach, pirate ship playground and splash pad it will be tough to pull the kids away but leave the afternoon free to explore the trails of Holiday Beach Conservation Area. If that’s not enough to tire them out stop at Ure’s Country Kitchen and Mini Golf on the way back for 18 holes of mini-golf and of course ice cream!
This one’s for the girls staycation!
You’re long-overdue for a girl’s weekend and this one has the perfect combo of shopping + wine! Book a couple of rooms at the Best Western PLUS Waterfront Hotel – where every room has a gorgeous view of the waterfront skyline. Head back to your hotel and tempt your taste buds at one of the many diverse dining options in Downtown Windsor. Day two is all about shopping til you drop! Hit up the unique shopping districts of Ottawa Street, Walkerville and wrap things up in Ford City with dinner at The Grand Cantina.
