Windsor City Councillor and Liberal candidate Irek Kusmierczyk has been elected as a federal member of parliament in Windsor-Tecumseh.
Kusmierczyk and NDP incumbent Cheryl Hardcastle fought an extremely close race for first place as results trickled in.
Kusmierczyk defeated Hardcastle by 18254 votes. Kusmierczyk received 18,896 votes, capturing 33.4% of the riding’s votes, followed by Hardcastle with 18,254 votes (32.3%), and Conservative Leo Demarce with 15,758 votes (27.9%).
Kusmierczyk has been a councillor for the City of Windsor since 2013.
He earned his PhD from Vanderbilt University and a Master Degree in Government from the London School of Economics specializing in local government and cross-border environmental relations around the Great Lakes.
