Humane Society Reminds Pet Owners to be Aware of Firework Risks

With the area’s largest fireworks display set to go off this evening, and a steady stream of fireworks displays planned for the Canada Day holiday, the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society reminds all pet owners of the need to care for your pets at this time.
Melanie Coulter from the Humane Society said in a release that many animals are frightened by fireworks, and even those who usually aren’t can still be spooked by a firecracker going off nearby. When frightened, animals may bolt through doors or windows, over fences, or even slip off leash. In their panic, the animal is often unable to find their way home, and is at risk of being hit by a car or harmed in another way.
All pet owners should take a few moments to ensure that their pet is safe and secure when fireworks displays are occurring to prevent possible heartbreak from an accident.
