A fundraising effort is underway by students at Walkerville Collegiate to remember a popular teacher who passed away suddenly.
Rob Baxter passed away during March Break from a brain aneurysm at the age of 37.
Students describe Baxter an amazing man who was a mentor, teacher and father-like figure to many Walkerville students. They say he was a man who had a major impact on the lives of many students.
Students are trying to raise $20,000 through Go Fund Me.com and other events to fund two major initiatives.
The first initiative is a local one. They hope to create a scholarship in Mr. Baxter’s name. Half of the proceeds they raise will go to this scholarship fund.
The other 50% of the funds raised will go to help fund construction of a high school in Debre Berhan, Ethiopia through the organization “Voice For Hope”. This organization has agreed to name one of the classrooms after Mr. Baxter.
In addition to the online fundraising, the students are also running several other events to raise money, including having t-shirts made with “Defiance” on them — a word he once had on his license plate.
A carnival for students and the community is also planned for this June.
You can find their page here for more information and to donate.
