Ten Friends Diner is not your ordinary greasy spoon.
The diner serves delicious breakfasts, lunches, and a variety of desserts – but it’s more than just a place to eat.
The diner’s Mission Statement is: “To assist the integration of consumer survivors of mental health services into society through specialized training and intermingling with the public, promoting camaraderie and teamwork.”
In 1993 the Mental Health Consumer/Survivor Employment Association of Essex County was created and the search began for a home for the diner that would help the community. After several relocations, the diner is now located at 1400 Windsor Avenue and currently has about 30 employees. The new location recently had renovations done and features a bright, well-lit eating area and a welcoming atmosphere.
“It’s always friendly here, there’s always people to talk to,” said Ten Friends employee Deborah Deal.
In the Spring and Summer months the diner operates a community garden, making it possible to serve the freshest of ingredients. Some of the recent lunch specials include English Muffin Pizzas, Meatloaf, Salisbury Steak, Mushroom Onion Swiss Burgers, and Chicken Finger Wraps. The diner is also available for catering and can host local events, such as business meetings and parties.
The Mental Health Consumer/Survivor Employment Association of Essex County recently launched their Mental Health Awareness Program (#LimeGreen) to help educate people about mental illness and break existing stigmas that surround mental illness. For more information about the program you can visit their webpage.
Ten Friends Diner is located at 1400 Windsor Avenue (at Ellis) and is open Monday – Sunday from 9am – 2pm. They can be contacted by calling 519- 254-3000 or you can visit their Facebook page or webpage for more information.
