On Thursday, the City of Windsor received the Ophea Award for Outstanding Contribution which recognizes an individual, group, or organization for their exemplary contribution to the lives of children and youth in the areas of health and physical education, health and physical activity promotion, advocacy, and/or community development.
The award is in recognition the city’s positive impact on the physical activity levels, health, wellness and educational experiences of children and youth, as well as the City’s practical and innovative approach to teaching strategies, curriculum implementation, program/resource development, policy development and health promotion.
City officials said that the International Children’s Games, hosted in Windsor-Essex this past summer, acted as the catalyst for the development of the In Sport WE Are One program.
Community partners were brought together well in advance of the Games to develop a program that recognized the importance of healthy living for children and youth, and to ensure that there was a lasting legacy that lived on after the Games.
In Sport WE Are One is a new initiative that builds upon existing programs within the school system, engaging and encouraging elementary school children to live healthy active lives. It also develops peer leaders within each school to mentor fellow students and to help implement and monitor the activities within their school communities. The program was implemented in 11 elementary schools during the 2012-2013 school year, and saw participation by more than 5,000 students.
