Health Unit COVID-19 Cases & Outbreaks Update For Friday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 36 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Friday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 24 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 7 cases are community acquired, and the acquisition sources of 5 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 20,608 on Thursday November 4th to 20,644 on Friday November 5th.

They say 193 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 17 since yesterday).

Variants of Concern

  • 1,840 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma variant (P.1)
  • 3,003 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 18)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain. The numbers listed are not necessarily correlated to today’s new cases due to the delay.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 325,849 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+184 since yesterday)
    • 15,499 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-148 since yesterday)
    • 310,350 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+332 since yesterday)
    • 5,752 people have received a 3rd dose/booster shot of a vaccine (+451 since yesterday)
  • A total of 641,951 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+967 since yesterday)

Vaccination Percentages

  • 74.3 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of < 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
    • 85.9 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
  • 70.8 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
    • 81.8 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
  • 1.3 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received a 3rd dose/booster shot of a vaccine (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County presently.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 19,985 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 18 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

The Health Unit announced one additional death from COVID-19 bringing the local death toll to 466. They say a woman in her 60s from the community passed away.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 9 hospitalizations today: 7 people in acute care (increase of 1), and 2 people in the ICU (decrease of 1) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
