Health Unit COVID-19 Cases & Outbreaks Update For Wednesday

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 29 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County on Wednesday.

New & Total Cases

The Health Unit says 13 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 5 cases are community acquired, and the acquisition sources of 11 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 19,627 on Tuesday September 28th to 19,656 on Wednesday September 29th.

They say 281 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (decrease of 7 since yesterday).

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 4,259 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 86 since yesterday).

Variant case strains:

  • 1,834 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma variant (P.1)
  • 2,255 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 86 since yesterday)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain. The numbers listed are not necessarily correlated to today’s new cases due to the delay.

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 315,043 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+390 since yesterday)
    • 23,181 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-215 since yesterday) *
    • 291,862 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+605 since yesterday)
    • 3,744 people have received a 3rd dose/booster shot of a vaccine (+157 since yesterday)
  • A total of 610,649 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+1,152 since yesterday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 71.9 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
    • 83.0 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)
  • 66.6 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.2 per cent since yesterday)
    • 76.9 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.1 per cent since yesterday)

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

The Health Unit lists 18,921 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 36 resolved cases since yesterday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 454.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 37 hospitalizations today: 29 people in acute care, and 8 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
