Health Unit COVID-19 Cases Update From The Weekend

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 77 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County from over the weekend. The Health Unit no longer reports case counts and statistics on weekends and now provides a weekend summary on Mondays.

New & Total Cases

Of the 77 new cases, 20 are from Saturday August 7th, 32 are from Sunday August 8th, and 25 were reported on Monday August 9th.

The Health Unit says 24 cases are community acquired, 19 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 4 cases are travel related, and the acquisition sources of 30 cases are still under investigation.

Total overall cases increased from 16,958 on Friday August 6th to 17,035 on Monday August 9th.

They say 140 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 61).

The Health Unit does not provide a breakdown of whether cases are in people who are vaccinated or not, however Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health said Friday that approximately 75 to 80 per cent of local cases are in people who are unvaccinated.

Variants of Concern

The Health Unit says 2,079 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 32).

Variant case strains:

  • 1,832 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha / U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7)
  • 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta / South African Variant (B.1.351)
  • 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma / Brazilian Variant (P.1)
  • 83 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta / Indian Variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 32)
  • 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa / Indian Variant (B.1.617.1)

The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain.

They say 52 variants of concern cases are currently active in Windsor-Essex (increase of 20).

Vaccinations

Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):

  • 291,035 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+1,088 since Friday)
    • 31,964 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-1,237 since Friday) *
    • 259,071 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+2,325 since Friday)
  • A total of 550,106 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+3,413 since Friday)

* this number is decreasing as people who *only* received their first dose become people with two doses

Vaccination Percentages

  • 66.44 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
    • 76.7 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine
  • 59.14 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated
    • 68.3 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated

Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

There are three vaccination programs at this time:

  • Mass Vaccination Clinics
    • Walk-in appointments are available at all mass vaccination sites for first doses, pending vaccine availability.

Resolved Cases

The Health Unit lists 16,459 total resolved cases.

That’s an increase of 16 resolved cases since Friday.

Deaths

There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 436.

Hospitalizations

The Health Unit lists 2 hospitalizations of people from Windsor-Essex today: 2 people in acute care, and 0 people in the ICU with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
