Goderich-based architectural firm, Allan Avis Architects will be awarded the James D. Strachan Award for Craftsmanship for restoration and stabilization of the ceiling at historic St. Joseph Church in the River Canard area by the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario.
“This was a difficult project and a number of options were explored in order to restore the plaster while preserving the hand painted artistic murals,” explained Allan Avis, Architect and Owner of Allan Avis Architects. “The goal was to attempt to restore the murals to look the way they did the day the artist completed them, and we believe we accomplished that.”
Avis said the project was successful thanks to the collaboration of the parish, the Diocese, the general contractor, all the trades people and specialized consultants.
“We are thrilled that Allan Avis Architects has received the James D. Strachan Award for Craftsmanship,” shared Father Dwayne Adam, pastor of St. Joseph, “It is a testament to our people who were determined to retain the beautiful murals despite the extra costs involved in restoring them. They are an important part of our heritage here at St. Joseph Parish, and our parishioners continue to support our fundraising efforts to pay for the beautiful work that was done. Our congratulations to Allan Avis and all of those who worked so diligently on this ambitious project.”
The award will be handed out Friday night at the 2016 ACO Provincial Heritage Awards in Toronto.
