Three Local Long-Term Care Facilities Recognized For Protecting Residents From Influenza

Three local long-term care homes in our region are being recognized for their outstanding efforts to protect their residents from influenza.

Extendicare Southwood Lakes has a 96% staff immunization rate, The Village of Aspen Lake in Tecumseh has a 94% staff immunization rate and Franklin Gardens in Leamington a 92% staff immunization rate.

“Influenza is a serious infection, mainly for susceptible people being cared for in facilities such as long-term care homes,” said Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Associate Medical Officer of Health of the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit. “The best way we can protect them, ourselves and our community from influenza is with an annual influenza vaccination.”

Lora Piccinin, Manager of the Infectious Disease Prevention Department says that “Health care workers who are vaccinated against influenza help to decrease their own risk of illness and absenteeism as well as flu-related illnesses and deaths in those they care for. All of our health care facilities are encouraged to continue to improve staff immunization rates against influenza as it shows a strong commitment toward patient safety.”
