Local philanthropist Al Quesnel has donated $120,000 to St. Alphonsus church in Windsor to help with building restoration.
A 5-year fundraising campaign was launched in 2011 to raise $500,000 to advance the church’s ongoing restoration project, which began in 2000.
“This generous gift will help to bring our fundraising campaign to a successful conclusion,” said pastor Nicholas N. Mauro Iko. “We look forward to having this construction completed by summer 2017.”
“It is imperative that we preserve and protect our architectural treasures, especially our churches,” said Quesnel, founder of the Quesnel Family Foundation. “St. Alphonsus has played a significant role in the growth and evolution of our Catholic community in the Windsor region. I am delighted to play a part in ensuring the continued preservation of this historic church.”
Mike Ricketts, member of the Parish Finance Committee, expressed gratitude for all the contributions to the campaign, “Our beautiful building is 140 years old and costly to maintain. We are extremely grateful for the generosity of parishioners and friends of St. Alphonsus Church.”
St. Alphonsus, founded in 1865, is a Roman Catholic parish located in downtown Windsor, and is a part of the Diocese of London. The current church building was erected in 1871 and officially opened on July 1st, 1873.
