The Bell Box Murals Project is returning to Essex at the end of July with the goal of adding up to eight new murals to the town’s outdoor mural gallery.
Artists selected through a call for submissions process are scheduled to begin painting on Bell Canada utility boxes in Harrow Centre starting July on 25th.
“We’re very excited to expand the municipal murals project to Harrow,” says Sheila Herold, chair of the Arts, Culture and Tourism Committee. “It’s an opportunity to bring awareness to the Town’s large collection of outdoor art, while also expanding the program geographically. When these murals are done, the Town of Essex will have 29 murals that help to beautify the community in culturally and historically significant ways.”
In advance of the start date, Bell Canada will clean the utility boxes. On the start date, artists will first apply a white metal primer to prepare the surface. The primer needs to dry for at least three hours before artists can proceed with painting their murals. Once finished, the murals will be covered in a clear topcoat to help protect them from the elements.
Essex Centre currently has 13 large-scale murals in its outdoor mural gallery and eight Bell Box murals painted in 2013.
