Representatives from the University of Windsor Mental Health Awareness handed the Canadian Mental Health Association, Windsor-Essex County Branch a cheque for $1,000 this morning.

The funds were raised through a variety of fundraising activities organized by the students throughout the past year including bake sales and pancake breakfast.

Students who are members of the Mental Awareness group are interested in raising awareness about various mental health-related disorders, eradicating the societal stigma of these disorders, encouraging students to adopt healthier habits, and learning more about the brain.

“We are thrilled to be able to donate to such a wonderful cause again. In a world where mental illness is often overlooked, we want to help as much as we can to abolish the stigma and help others develop a better understanding,” says Katelyn Elder, representative from the University of Windsor Mental Health Awareness group.

The funds will be used to support the Bereavement program. This specialized program provides support to adults and children who are dealing with the loss of a loved one. Over 600 individuals receive counselling annually. This program receives minimal government support, relying on community support for its availability.

“We are extremely appreciative of the ongoing efforts of the University of Windsor’s Mental Health Awareness group. These students find time in their demanding schedules to make mental health a priority. The work that they do to address mental illness stigma and raise funds is very important,” states Mary Wilson, Acting CEO and Director of Operations, CMHA-WECB.
