Two local elementary schools were honoured this week as “Peace Schools” as chosen by the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland.

John Campbell Public School and Princess Elizabeth Public School both held school/community celebrations as they were awarded Peace Poles signifying “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in four languages –English and French plus the two ethnic languages which reflect the school population.

Since its inception in 2006, the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland has presented 29 elementary schools in Windsor and Essex County with the distinction of being a “peace school.”

To qualify as a peace school, elementary school staff and students are encouraged to adopt the principles outlined in Rotary International’s mission statement that works to: promote international understanding and goodwill; encourage all people to respect life and the dignity of every person; reject violence in all forms; and work for a harmonious solution to conflict among all people.

“By adopting these principles, elementary school students learn about peace at an early age which hopefully will lead them to experience happy and healthy lives,” say Sam and Julie Dragich, Co-Chairs of the Peace Schools Committee of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland.
