The 80’s Club featuring A Flock Of Seagulls, Men Without Hats, and Spoons is set to light up The Colosseum stage on Thursday, February 8th.
A Flock Of Seagulls is known for their bizarrely teased haircuts and smash single “I Ran (So Far Away).” Growing out of the synth-heavy and ruthlessly stylish new Romantic Movement, the group released its debut EP in 1981, with its lead track “Telecommunication” becoming an underground hit in the Euro-disco and new wave clubs.
The band released their major-label debut A Flock Of Seagulls in 1982. The lead single, “I Ran (So Far Away)“ was picked up by MTV thanks to its icily attractive video, which featured long shots of Mike Score (lead vocals, keyboards) and his distinctive, cascading hair. The single climbed into the American Top Ten, taking the album with it. The group is also celebrated for its tracks “Wishing (If I Had A Photograph of You),” “Space Age Love Song,” and “The More You Live, The More You Love.”
The band’s reputation has been cemented in pop culture from Ross’ haircut in Friends and “I Ran” being featured on Grand Theft Auto Radio to references in Pulp Fiction, X-Men, and The Wedding Singer. In 2018, the band appeared on record together for the first time since 1984. Ascension was recorded in multiple studios around the world and featured the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra providing backing to their hits.
With iconic chart-topping smash hits, “The Safety Dance” and “Pop Goes The World,” Men Without Hats have been at the forefront of popular electronic music since their formation in 1978. The group boasts 31 million views on YouTube, 1.8 million monthly listeners on Spotify, 81.6 thousand followers on Bandsintown, and 600 thousand monthly listeners on Apple Music.
Recently, the group released two new albums, Again (Part 1) and Again (Part 2). Part 1 is an album of covers that pays tribute to The Rolling Stones, Lou Reed, and The Tragically Hip. It also brings a wonderful twist on the band’s classic hit “The Safety Dance” with the song “No Friends Of Mine.” Part 2 features wonderfully constructed original music with a heavy nod to the synth-pop and new-wave roots of the bands.
Formed in 1980, Spoons helped define the sound of pop and new wave in the 80s with hits such as “Nova Heart,” “Romantic Traffic,” “Old Emotions,” and “Tell No Lies.” Their album Arias & Symphonies was named one of the “20 Most Influential Albums of The 80s” by The Chart Magazine and their song “Nova Heart” was included in Bob Mersereau’s book The Top 100 Canadian Singles of All Time.
Recently, the Spoons celebrated their 40th anniversary with the release of two very special albums. Repeatable is a collection of their hits and fan favourites from 1980 to 2020. The album Echoes is a collection of Spoons’ songs re-recorded by artists from around the world.
Tickets go on sale at 10am on Friday, November 17th.
