Windsor City Council has voted to replace the downtown outdoor ice rink.
Council heard Monday evening that the Charles Clarke Square rink was at the end of life and could no longer operate in its current state due to several brine leaks. Should the city operate the rink in the 2022/2023 season, a significant repair or redesign would cost about $1 million.
Administration recommended to the city council to decommission the space at Charles Clarke Square, expand programming at Lanspeary Outdoor Rink for 2022/2023, and plan immediately for a new replacement rink as part of the City Hall and Civic Esplanade project.
The consultant’s report for the design of a new outdoor ice rink at City Hall is estimated at $300,000 and will be funded from the long-term redevelopment plan for City Hall Square and Civic Esplanade.
The final report will be provided to Council as part of the 2023 Budget for consideration of all available funding options for the construction of a new outdoor rink.
It is hoped to be open for the 2023/2024 skating season.
