Health Unit COVID-19 Cases Update From The Weekend

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced 69 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor and Essex County from over the weekend. The Health Unit does not report case counts and statistics on weekends but provides a weekend summary.
New & Total Cases
Of the 69 new cases: 31 cases were reported on October 16th, 21 cases were reported on October 17th, and 17 cases were reported on October 18th.
The Health Unit says 38 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 18 cases are community acquired, 3 cases are travel related, 2 cases are outbreak related, and the acquisition sources of 8 cases are still under investigation.
Total overall cases increased from 20,195 on Friday October 15th to 20,264 on Monday October 18th.
They say 227 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex (decrease of 37 since Friday).
Variants of Concern
The Health Unit says 4,732 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (increase of 59 since Friday).
Variant case strains:
- 1,839 of the total variant cases to date have been the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7)
- 4 of the total variant cases to date have been the Beta variant (B.1.351)
- 16 of the total variant cases to date have been the Gamma variant (P.1)
- 2,721 of the total variant cases to date have been the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) (increase of 60 since Friday)
- 2 of the total variant cases to date has been the Kappa variant (B.1.617.1)
The Health Unit says there is a time delay of several days between specimen collection, preliminary screening, and confirmation of a variant case’s strain. The numbers listed are not necessarily correlated to today’s new cases due to the delay.
Vaccinations
Here’s the Health Unit’s vaccination update for today (residents of Windsor-Essex):
- 321,634 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine (+839 since Friday)
- 18,267 people have received only their first dose of a vaccine (-632 since Friday)
- 303,367 people have received both doses of a vaccine (+1,471 since Friday)
- 4,610 people have received a 3rd dose/booster shot of a vaccine (+106 since Friday)
- A total of 629,611 vaccine doses have been administered to Windsor-Essex County residents (+2,416 since Friday)
Vaccination Percentages
- 73.4 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.2 per cent since Friday)
- 84.8 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) have received at least one dose of a vaccine (increase of 0.4 per cent since Friday)
- 69.2 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (all ages) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.3 per cent since Friday)
- 80.0 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents (ages 12+) are fully vaccinated (increase of 0.4 per cent since Friday)
Note: The Health Unit says 438,001 people are living in Windsor and Essex County in 2021.

The Health Unit lists 19,577 total resolved cases.
That’s an increase of 103 resolved cases since Friday.
Deaths
There have been no additional deaths from COVID-19 today and the local death toll stands at 460.

The Health Unit lists 14 hospitalizations today: 10 people in acute care (increase of 8), and 4 people in the ICU (decrease of 3) with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor Essex.
