Construction has begun on a new 142-suite rental apartment building at 1200 & 1250 Southfield Drive in Tecumseh.

The new development, called Southfield Green, is owned by Skyline Apartment REIT. Once the development is complete, the complex will be managed by Skyline Living, which currently manages 299 suites across three buildings in Tecumseh, including 11873 and 11917 Tecumseh Road East, adjacent to the new development site.

The complex will feature four-storey, 71-unit apartment buildings with a one-storey amenity building is situated between the apartment buildings.

It also includes 193 parking spaces, landscaping, an outdoor amenity that consists of a BBQ area with seating,  an electric fireplace/bonfire area and an outdoor dog run area to the south of the amenity building, as well as an indoor/outdoor lounge and terrace, a dog run, and an on-site gym and yoga studio.

“SkyDev is proud to break ground in Tecumseh and offer new, high-quality rental housing to 142 families in the face of a pandemic,” said Greg Jones, President, SkyDev. “The past few months have intensified the housing crisis in Ontario. The need is stronger than ever in the region, with the availability of rental apartments at all-time lows. Southfield Green will provide more availability and choices to the people of Tecumseh.”

The development will also have several environmental features, including on-site EV chargers and a community garden.

“I’m pleased that Skyline is expanding its presence in our town, where we have seen substantial demand for new housing,” said Mayor McNamara. “Residential developments like Southfield Green will significantly contribute to the growth and vibrancy of our town, allowing more families to live, work, and shop here.”
