Windsor City Council voted to keep the ice at Adie Knox Area for at least another year.
Several delegations spoke to council to keep the ice surface in place, including minor hockey, and figure skating groups. One delegation spoke in favor of removing it, to make it a permanent home for the Border City Brawlers Roller Derby League.
In the recommendation to remove the ice, city administration stressed that the re-purposing of the arena was not due to being underutilized, but rather the total supply of ice in all arenas across Windsor exceeds the total ice demand in prime time. They said that all groups who use the ice would be relocated in other arenas.
Councillor Jo-Anne Gignac made a motion to keep the ice surface open for the next year, and talk to user groups about their needs and bring this back for the 2016 budget.
Councillor Bill Marra noted that you can’t forget the impact on the community when decisions like these are made.
In the end, City Council went against administration’s recommendation and voted unanimously to keep the ice in place.
