Walkerville is under construction, but the business community is still alive and well and open for business, according to a campaign to keep people visiting.
DIG Walkerville, a project launched by local business owners, is designed to keep the public informed of places to park, special events and promotions.
Construction began Monday morning on a facelift for the business district along Wyandotte Street between Gladstone and Argyle. Construction includes watermain, road and sewer work, and reconstruction of sidewalks and the road surface.
Streetscape elements include decreased pedestrian crossing distance by “bumping out” curbs and adding treatments to the pavement at intersections. Similar bump outs were recently added to Wyandotte West near the University. New trees, benches and lights will also be added.
Despite the construction, parking is still available along side streets, in five business parking lots, and one municipal parking lot.
Construction is being completed by J & J Lepera Infrastructures Inc. and is expected to last three to four months.
