A funnel cloud is seen in this photo taken by windsoriteDOTca reader Alyssa Eyraud
Environment Canada has confirmed that a funnel cloud was seen in the area between Tecumseh and Lakeshore, late this afternoon.
windsoriteDOTca reader Alyssa Eyraud captured a photo of the cloud descending from the sky around 5:30pm near Manning and County Road 46. Eyraud said she was west of Manning between the 11th and 12th concession roads when she snapped the photo.
“It was a funnel cloud and we have had that report from other [weather] spotters as well,” says Environment Canada meteorologist Peter Kimball.
Kimball said Environment Canada has not received any reports of damage.
“We don’t think it actually touched the ground,” he said. “It didn’t last very long, and it was a brief cell on radar.”
Kimball said funnel clouds do not receive a tornado classification such as one on the Enhanced Fujita, or EF scale, if they do not touch down as tornados. The EF scale ranks the strength of tornadoes between zero and five based on the damage they cause.
But Environment Canada does add events like this to the history books.
“We do keep a record of it,” he said.
Windsor/Essex County was under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch at the time of the funnel cloud.
