On Friday night Canada’s southernmost bar, in it’s southernmost town, was host to a wildly fun rock’n’roll show.
The Colchester Bar and Grill (CBG’s) located on County Road 50 opened it’s doors to Freedom Within, a new three-piece band playing their second show. The cozy bar was packed with people of all ages, some who came for the show, some who stumbled upon it, everyone loving it.
The music was soulful covers of classic bar songs, everything from Sublime to Pink Floyd to Bad Company, with a requested encore of Buffalo Springfield’s ‘Stop Hey What’s That Sound.’ The band announced their last song about six times as the audience kept calling for more after each one. Patrons danced and sang along as the band continued to rock out, impressive in their stage presence as well as their music.
When Freedom Within did finally decide to step down, the stage was commandeered by other musicians, among them members of local metal acts Weapon of Choice and After Ashes. Drum solos, jam sessions, and Red Hot Chili Peppers covers kept the crowd wound up, and got the original band back up and playing.
While currently playing the rural bar circuit with covers, Freedom Within is a band to watch out for in the coming months, as I for one eagerly anticipate some originals, but wouldn’t hesitate to see them play another show like this one.
